Established in 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Brno’s Planet Festival has since become a regular event, attracting both space enthusiasts and casual spectators. This year’s edition will take place in the Kraví hora Park from 7-13 July, and again from 4-10 August. The festival will unveil a brand new model, Lithosphere, which will be the 7th in the series of giant planetary representations.
The new Lithosphere model shows what the Earth would look like if it was entirely drained of all water, including rivers, lakes, glaciers and swamps. The resulting replica appears as a dead world, with no traces of life and dominant brown and ochre tones where green and blue colors used to prevail. The model also presents much harsher reliefs, as it depicts the deep oceanic floor, modelled using sonar technology.
This new model will be available to the public both in July and August, although it will be accompanied by different replicas at each stage. The first week will showcase the Terralon and Temnalon models, which represent the current Earth seen from space by day and night respectively. The second week in August will see the Lunalón, Marsmeloun, and Astrosphere, which represent the Moon, Mars, and the nearest cosmic surroundings of our planet as seen by the GAIA spacecraft.

Alongside the display of these gigantic models will be a rich programme of other events, including shows for all ages in the Observatory’s Digitarium, Pink Floyd musical shows, and exhibitions on the Czech role in space and the theme of water in the universe. Various popular movies will also be projected as part of the Planetarium’s summer cinema, and sci-fi lovers are invited to meet on 5 August in their favorite costumes.
Tickets, programme and additional information are available on the event’s official site.
