From January 2022, paper tickets for services of the Brno Transport Company (DPMB) will be entirely replaced by electronic tickets. Brno is the third city in the Czech Republic to adopt a fully electronic ticketing system, after Ostrava in 2019 and Ústí nad Labem in 2020. Credit: DPMB.
Czech Rep, Oct 6 (BD) – From January 2022, DPMB will say goodbye to paper tickets, to be replaced by an electronic-only system.
“Digitization is a trend that people are demanding and that a modern city must inevitably follow,” said Mayor of Brno Markéta Vaňková. “Two thirds of the current 184,000 season ticket users use an electronic form, which is faster and more convenient to buy.”
One of the main reasons for the digitization is the particularly high cost of replacing the existing system, five times more than adopting a new electronic system. In this case, digitization therefore also means reducing costs, including printing and distribution costs. The estimated savings are CZK 4 million per year in fees for payments through the payment gateway and staff.
However, DPMB said it will guarantee the necessary support to customers, as customer service will still be provided in person in DPMB branches for those who need it.
Students over the age of 18 have been using e-tickets since last year, and from November 1st, everyone under 70 will also make the switch. Starting from January 2022, electronic ticketing will be further extended to other age groups, such as under-18s.
Brno will be the third city in the Czech Republic to abandon paper season tickets, following Ostrava in 2019 and Ústí nad Labem in 2020.
Electronic tickets will be available from the www.brnoid.cz e-shop, and in the DPMB facility, and can be purchased using cash or bank card. An application acts as the ticket carrier.
