Brno, Sep 21 (BD) – The BRNO16 International Short Film Festival is back again this October. In existence since the 1960s, it is one of the oldest Short Film Festivals not only in the Czech Republic but the world, and is in its 62nd consecutive year in 2021.
The festival will take place from October 13th-17th, with a rich variety of genres presented. This year, the broad cultural catalogue covers everything from traditional features to animated, experimental, student, professional and non-professional short films.
The event takes its name from the 16mm film format, but nowadays only one section of the festival is dedicated to analogue format films, while the others will screen short films in digital format.
Alongside the festival selection, there will be a rich accompanying programme: screenings from the film reel; workshops for children; a video-gaming section, “Filmgaming”; seminars; and meetings with filmmakers. According to Martina Marešová, one of the event organizers, “All screenings are English Friendly, except for some discussions which will be in Czech.”
Go Beyond Your Limits
Every year a different theme is proposed, and films in the festival selection must refer to this theme. This year’s leitmotif is “We Can Do It / Máme na to”. “We can do it” could be related to war, but is also a feminist motto. It evokes an expression of optimism, and reminds us that we can do anything, even if it scares us. In this case, ‘it’ could also refer to the festival itself.
The off-program selections will reflect a feminist theme, relating to the difficulties faced by emerging female filmmakers and minority groups, including hurdles related to the pandemic. Works that did not have the chance to participate in last year’s edition will also be presented.
Like other festivals and live events, BRNO16 has adapted to the general trend, so the 62nd edition will be available both live and via streaming. The festival venue will be Kino Art on Cihlářská.
The Second Journey “In The Middle Of Nowhere”
Due to the pandemic, last year’s competition took place completely online, which did not give the creators, producers, and public the chance to enjoy the works to the fullest. To make up for this, last year’s films will also be screened during the festival.
“We were sorry that people only had the opportunity to see this great program online, where movies don’t stand out enough. So this year we can present the films on the big screen and in the presence of the creators,” said festival director Milan Šimánek.
Alongside the international competition, there will also be a competition dedicated exclusively to Czech and Slovak creators, Československá 16, in its third edition this year.
