Brno, Sep 14 (BD) – Brno city council is launching a research study to improve the efficient use of rainwater in the city. The study will map the situation in seven city districts and propose specific ecological solutions for selected buildings owned by the City of Brno.
“Since 2017, the City of Brno’s Department of the Environment has been awarding ecological subsidies for citizens, which have met with great interest from the public,” said the Mayor of Brno, Markéta Vaňková (ODS). “Now the city will investigate how to approach its own buildings and premises, thanks to the study of adaptive measures for the use of rainwater. This will help us ensure the effective use of rainwater on specific buildings and areas in Brno.”
According to First Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-CSL), the eight-month study will cover seven city districts: Bohunice, Kohoutovice, Komín, Nový Lískovec, Brno-sever, Černovice and Židenice, a total area of 386 hectares. “It is interesting that the study will not only focus on buildings and structures but will also include open spaces, parking lots, sidewalks, and entire neighbourhoods,” said Hladík. “Emphasis will be placed on the diversity of solutions, which could include permeable paved surfaces, green roofs, retention tanks, infiltration devices, or storage tanks. These can then be used for irrigation of greenery. It will be possible to combine the proposed elements.”
Based on the results of the study, proposals will be developed based on functionality and economic effectiveness, which will then be taken forward for implementation by the city.
