Brno, Sep 2 (BD) – After the symbolic opening of the cultural season with the free concert on the Piazzetta in front of the Janáček Theater, the rich worlds of opera, ballet and theatre will return with full force.
Safety measures are still in place to protect against the transmission of COVID-19, but culture is otherwise ready to help Brno return to its normal full life.
There are 22 premieres scheduled for the next 10 months — including five operas, three ballets and 14 theatrical performances — from a who’s who of international culture, including Beethoven, Shakespeare, Prokofiev, Chekov, Molière, Brecht, Havel, Čapek and O’Neill.
The premieres are listed below, but there are additional performances scheduled for each of the shows.

OPERA
Řecké pašije (The Greek Passion), which had its premiere postponed twice because of the coronavirus, will finally be presented on November 5th, 7th, and 19th in Janacek Theatre.
Here are the operatic premieres during this season:

April 13th, 2022 — Kouzelná flétna (The Magic Flute)
June 17th, 2022 — Otello (Othello)

BALLET
The fall ballet season has been dubbed “homage to the greats”.
It begins with a celebration of the iconic Czech choreographer Pavel Šmok with its premiere Stabat Mater in Mahen Theatre on Friday. The three-part performance is a tribute to Šmok, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 88, after a long career as a choreographer and dancer. He wrote and produced ballet performances, acted in theatre and film, and he taught and influenced many generations of creative people. He performed about 100 ballets, including 60 world premieres, mostly to the music of Czech composers.
The first part of the tribute performance is Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) by Arnold Schoenberg, based on a poem by Richard Dehmel. Bedřich Smetana, Trio in G Minor, is the second part. And the highlight is the namesake for the evening: Stabat Mater. The music, by Antonin Dvořák, provides the flow for one of Šmok’s most acclaimed works.
Later, the local ballet company will recognize the legendary Beethoven on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his birth. Then, after more than 30 years, Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet Cinderella will be premiered in Brno.

THEATRE
Theatrical performances are in Czech, but those with a deep background in Chekov will understand “The Seagull” and those who have been influenced by Shakespeare will certainly enjoy “Twelfth Night”.
