Brno, Jun 10 (BD) — FC Zbrojovka is second in the standings and SK Líšeň slipped to 11th; local baseball teams drop five of six games and drop in the standings; and the Brno sports schedule.

SK Líšeň Wants Revenge against FC Zbrojovka Brno

Naturally, when a city has two sports teams in the same league, whenever they play each other, the game will have a little extra meaning — or, actually, a lot of extra meaning.

Tomorrow, on Thursday, SK Líšeň will host FC Zbrojovka Brno in a big Fortuna:Národní Liga rivalry game. On-site fans are still significantly restricted, but CT Sport will show the game at 6 p.m.

The two teams have a lot to play for:

Geography — The team stadiums are tram rides apart. Offices have fans of both teams. It’s all fodder for a classic rivalry.

Importance — Zbrojovka (13-5-3, 44 points) is a solid second in the standings and they have a good chance to return to the top league next year. Líšeň (6-8-7, 26), which recently slipped to 11th place, has moved up the levels of Czech football and the Fortuna:Národní Liga is their level; they are doing admirably in their first season and want to stay in the second league.

Form — Zbrojovka has earned 10 points in the four games since the league restarted after the COVID-19 pandemic pause. On Sunday, they beat Trinec, 5-0. Meanwhile, Líšeň has two points from four games and they most recently lost at FK Viktoria Žižkov, 2-1.

Intertwined Team Histories — Zbrojovka, the more established club, often used Líšeň as a farm club of sorts in order to give young players a place to grow and injured players a place to recover. They often played training games against each other. More recently, Zbrojovka has taken many members of the Líšeň team, including head coach Miloslav Machálek (who arrived this season), sparkplug David Krška (who came over last fall) and striker Jakub Přichystal (who had been on loan). Just since the winter break, three players have come to Brno from Líšeň, including Jan Hladík, Adrián Čermák, and starting goalkeeper Martin Šustr.

The first meeting was in Kralove Pole on Sept. 14 and won by Zbrojovka, 2-0.

Regardless of what happens in the rivalry game, the next round will come quickly. SK Líšeň goes to 1.SK Prostějov on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Zbrojovka Brno will get an extra day of rest before hosting Jihlava in another important game on Monday. The game will be on CT Sport at 6 p.m.

Brno Teams Get Hit Hard in Week No. 3

Brno baseball teams started the season strong, but Week No. 3 brought some tough results: the three local teams lost five of six games and all of them dropped in the standings.

Kotlářka Praha (5-1) and Eagles Praha (5-1) are now atop the standings.

Technika Brno (4-2) split games with SaBaT Praha (1-5) after Michal Kočí pitched a masterful five innings of shutout and Richard Sázavský went 3-for-4 with a homer and six RBI in a 19-0 blowout.

Cardion Hroši Brno (4-2) lost twice to two-time defending-champion Arrows Ostrava (4-2).

And Draci Brno (3-3) dropped two to league-leader Kotlářka Praha.

This week, Brno will have a nice matchup: Cardion Hroši Brno X Technika Brno at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Technika Brno X Cardion Hroši Brno at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to
