Brno, Mar 10 (BD) – Events are being held today to mark 100 years since the adoption of the Czechoslovak Constitution in 1920. The events were attended by Slovak President Zuzana Caputova, on her first official visit to Brno. Caputova was welcomed by Brno Mayor Marketa Vankova and members of the Brno public holding red hearts and waving European flags.
However, most senior Czech politicians were absent from the commemorations; Prime Minister Andrej Babis is not in Brno due to the coronavirus emergency, and President Milos Zeman and Justice Minister Marie Benesova also declined to attend. The most senior Czech politician in attendance was Senate President Milos Vystrcil.
Caputova’s supporters in Brno organized an event via Facebook. According to Ondrej Zeman of the group, Brno Together: “We told those interested via Facebook that a heart, perhaps cut out of paper, would be a good symbol of welcome. For us it is a symbol of what is missing in our Castle. We are also planning to present her with flowers.”
Adopted in 1920, the first Czechoslovak Constitution was a groundbreaking document, declaring the equality of all citizens and proclaiming a range of rights and freedoms for all. It was also at the time the most progressive constitution in the world on women’s rights.
