Brno, Mar 2 (BD) – On Thursday, Representatives of the City of Brno and 28 stakeholders signed the Memorandum of Assistance to Reduce Emissions in the City Area. The stakeholders include universities, manufacturing companies, shopping centers and developers. The City of Brno called the signing of the Memorandum a “collective promise on a common journey towards a climate-resistant and -responsible Brno.”
The aim of the measures included in the Memorandum is to provide the citizens of Brno with comfortable microclimatic conditions in times of climate change, while at the same time fulfilling the obligation set out in the Covenant of Mayors for sustainable energy and climate. By signing the Covenant, the City of Brno made a commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40% by 2030. Now, a concrete action plan with a CO2 emissions analysis and proposals for their reduction has been drawn up, called the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP).
“The city will apply the concrete measures of the Action Plan primarily to its own buildings and facilities and, for example, to the rolling stock. However, the commitment cannot be achieved without the involvement of the tertiary sector, the creative industries and related services, where analyses show a trend of increasing electricity consumption with a significant share of total emissions. I am therefore very pleased that the memorandum will be signed at the Festival of Architecture, thanks to which the city and other organizations operating in Brno will participate in reducing emissions,” said First Deputy Mayor Petr Hladik before signing the Memorandum.
The participating organizations will incorporate the memorandum commitments into their day-to-day operations, as well as their general operations. The recommended steps to reduce emissions are, according to the City of Brno, to carry out construction and renovation work to achieve the lowest possible future energy use of the building, to use renewable sources, to use low-emission or other friendly means of transport, to reduce water consumption, and to build retention areas and reservoirs.
