MEN’S FOOTBALL

Zbrojovka, Líšeň Tied Again in Standings

SK Líšeň and FC Zbrojovka are again tied in the Fortunta: Narodni Liga standings.

Líšeň rebounded from its loss at Zbrojovka with its first home victory of the season on Saturday, a 3-0 triumph over 1.SK Prostějov. Guy Reteno Elekana scored first and second half goals. In between, Marek Vintr converted a penalty.

Líšeň is now 3-4-2 on the season.

Zbrojovka (3-4-2), which had taken a brief lead over Líšeň in the standings with its victory, came back down when it lost at FC Vysočina Jihlava. The two Brno teams are fifth in the league, although Líšeň has four more goals this year with 18.

FC Zbrojovka gave up a goal just before halftime, then gave up another goal right after halftime to fall behind by two goals in Jihlava, the second-place team in the league, on Friday night.

Ondřej Vaněk put Brno on the board in the 55th minute. He then assisted Antonín Růsek for the second goal in the 88th minute. Unfortunately, the home team scored in the waning moments of the game.

SK Líšeň travels to FK Pardubice for a 10:15 a.m. game on Saturday. Later that day, Zbrojovka hosts Hradec Králové at 6:30 p.m.

Both teams play third-round MOL Cup games on Tuesday: Zbrojovka goes to Jablonec for a 4:30 p.m. game and Líšeň goes to SK Sigma Olomouc for a 5 p.m. game.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Lokomotiva Drops Third Straight Game

Lokomotiva Brno-Horní Heršpice hosted AC Sparta Praha, one of the women’s leagues powerhouse teams, and slipped below .500 for the season, giving up four second-half goals and losing, 0-5, on Saturday.

This Saturday, Lokomotiva (2-0-3) goes to undefeated league-leader Slavia Praha. The game starts at 4 p.m.

Lokomotiva Brno H.H. is tied with 1. FC Slovácko for fifth in the league with six points.

ICE HOCKEY

Kometa Enjoys an All-Around Positive Sunday

Sunday was a great night in DRFG Arena: 1, HC Kometa earned three points for the first time this season; 2, Kometa beat longtime rival HC Sparta Praha, 2-0; and 3, Kometa honored its retired longtime captain Leoš Čermák.

Oh, and Karel Vejmelka got the shutout in goal and Peter Mueller assisted on both goals (Petr Holík in the first minute and Jan Hruška in the 27th minute).

Kometa are now in the middle of the pack in the Tipsport exgtraliga with six points, only four behind league-leader Liberec after just four league games.

Čermák was the team captain during the back-to-back championship seasons in 2016-17 and 2017-18 and started with the team in 2011.

The 41-year-old will continue with the organization as a player development manager for youth teams. He will also help his wife in Třebíč, his hometown, at their wedding salon.

Čermák brought an immediate intensity to the team — earning the ignominious title as the most-penalized player in the league in his first season — as he led the team, which was newly promoted to the extraliga, to an underdog berth in the championship series and a runner-up finish to Pardubice.

In all, he was a central part of the team’s resurgence, playing a leadership role for two titles, two second-place finishes and a third-place finish. He played a total of 823 extraliga games, including 471 for the Kometa. He also played several seasons in Russia and 33 games for the national team, scoring 10 goals and getting nine assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Hoops Seasons Starts Back Up

KP Brno, who was runner up to Praha the previous year, starts with road games at Loko Trutnov on Saturday and at Sokol Nilfisk H. Králové X KP Brno next Wednesday.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to bruno@brnodaily.cz.
