MEN’S FOOTBALL

Zbrojovka Retains Status as Top Dog

FC Zbrojovka took the first round of the Brno Derby when it beat SK Líšeň in front of 8,122 fans last Saturday.

The point man of the Zbrojovka offense scored twice: striker Jan Pázler put the home team on the board in the 22nd minute; then, his second-half replacement, Lukas Magera scored a beautiful goal in the 84th minute.

Zbrojovka, which is now 3-4-1 from eight games in the Fortuna:Narodni Liga, had made several personnel moves in order to maintain its hopes for returning to the top league. Ondřej Vaněk, a 29-year-old midfielder, returned to his home-club and proved to be a powerful force in the middle of the Zbrojovka offense. Michal Šmíd, another addition for this game, played like a brick wall at the back.

Líšeň, which is playing in the second league for the first time, was weakened by injuries to Lamine Fall and Patrik Demeter and the fact that they could not use three players who are on loan from Zbrojovka: Marek Vintr, Dominik Kříž and Martin Zikl

On Friday, Zbrojovka will play at FC Vysočina Jihlava.

SK Líšeň has a home game on Saturday against 1.SK Prostějov, which starts at 4:30 p.m.

Lokomotiva Loses at Plzen

After starting the season with two wins, Lokomotiva Brno-Horní Heršpice has evened its record with two losses.

Lokomotiva lost, 6-1, last Sunday at FC Viktoria Plzeň. Lucie Lišková scored for Brno in the 32nd minute. The previous week, Lokomotiva lost its first home game, 1-3, to Dukla Praha in a downpour of rain on Sept. 7.

It is still early in the season. Three teams have identical 2-0-2 records: 1. FC Slovácko, the team that Lokomotiva beat to open the season last month; FC Viktoria Plzeň; and Lokomotiva Brno H.H.

Lokomotiva returns to Horní Heršpice this Saturday to host AC Sparta Praha (2-0-1), one of the league powerhouse teams, at 11 a.m.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to bruno@brnodaily.cz.
