Brno, Jun 17 (BD) – On Wednesday, Brno City Council approved a plan to transfer CZK 15 million to its forest management company, Brno City Forests, to acquire forested areas that are connected to the forests that already belong to the city. Private forest management is becoming increasingly difficult due to bark beetles and drought, and Brno City Forests currently have offers standing for the purchase of several areas of privately-owned forest. The allocation of funds from the city should help to speed up this process. The plan still has to be approved by the City Assembly at its meeting on June 18.

First Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) explained the reasoning behind the plan: “I consider it important to expand and improve the condition of urban forests, both for present and future generations. Their non-productive functions are also gaining importance in the context of urban expansion, especially recreational and water management. That’s why it is important to pay attention to the long-term sustainability of forests in general, they are becoming more important.”
