Brno, May 14 (BD) – Kateřina Šedá is a well-known conceptual artist from Brno whose work has a strong social element, often incorporating themes from urban planning and social architecture. In 2016, Šedá published “BRNOX”, a guidebook to the Cejl area east of the city centre (also known as the Brno Bronx), which won a Magnesia Litera award. The book maps Cejl in ten routes, highlighting interesting and unconventional places and offering suggestions for visitors to the area. One of the routes, the grey route, is the focus of her latest project, “BRNOX II”.

The aim of BRNOX II is to revitalise Cejl by changing public spaces to make them more pleasant for the local community. The Brno Bronx has an area of about 63 hectares and falls within the city districts of Brno-Centre and Brno-North. The Brno-Centre District council will join the project with the task of upgrading the area on the corner of Vlhká and Cejl, adding greenery, benches and games for children. The Brno-North District will ensure the revitalization of the public space on Bratislavská under the plane trees. The City of Brno will also contribute by repairing facades of houses, sidewalks, adding street furniture, and other such work.

“We like the proposal to revitalize this public space based on the project of Kateřina Šedá and we agree that upgrades are required. We have evaluated the costs, so we know that we will need roughly CZK 3 million from the City to implement it,” said Vojtěch Mencl (ODS), Mayor of Brno-Centre.

The partners on the project have agreed to set up a regular working group to coordinate the implementation of the project. The Environment Department of the Brno City Hall will be responsible for the final completion of the project.
