MEN’S BASKETBALL

Basket Brno Welcomes Opava Thursday

egoé Basket Brno will bring a renewed energy to the court at Campus Square when it hosts BK Opava on Thursday.

Brno has won two of its last four games, including its previous home game against USK Praha.

There are only five games left in the first part of the season. In the first week of February, the 12 teams of the Kooperative NBL teams will be split into two divisions. The top eight teams in the standings go into Group A1. The bottom four go into Group A2.

It is not inconceivable that 10th-place Brno (5-12) would catch eighth-place Praha (6-11) and earn their way into the advanced group, thus guaranteeing that they would not be relegated to a lower league at the end of the season.

BK Opava (9-8) is in seventh place. They beat Brno handily in mid November.

On Saturday, Brno travels to BC GEOSAN Kolín (5-12). The loss to Kolín in November led to the coaching change that has since put Christianos Chougas in charge of the team.

The following Saturday — Jan. 19, 2019 — Brno will host undefeated league-leaders ČEZ Basketball Nymburk at 7 p.m.

HOCKEY

HC Kometa Inches Up to Fourth Place

HC Kometa beat Oceláři Třinec, 4-1, then split extra-time shootouts with Mountfield HK, 4-5 on Sunday and Olomouc, 4-3, on Tuesday to start their current five-game homestand.

Brno is now fourth in the Tipsport extraliga standings with 56 points, with a bit less than two months left in the regular season as they continue their quest to win a third consecutive title.

The homestand continues with Karlovy Vary on Friday at 6 p.m. and Litvínov on Sunday at 5 p.m.

American Peter Mueller added three goals last week to bring his team-leading total to 17. He has 31 points, including 16 assists. Petr Holík leads the team with 35 points: 10 goals and 25 assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Gill Leads KP Brno To Big Win

Jasmine Gill led KP Brno (8-3) to victory over second-place BS DSK Basketball Nymburk KV (9-3) last Saturday. The win puts KP Brno in third place in the ZBL, with a game in hand.

Gill was 7 of 8 from 2-point range and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. Her 22 points were her personal best in Brno and double her average.

Lenka Bartáková, in her debut with the team, played more than 31 minutes, took three shots from the field and missed only a 3-point attempt as she totaled six points. Bartáková played on the Czech national team at the London Olympic Games in 2012 and recently moved to Brno from Tsmoki Minsk (Belarus).

The victory was also the home debut of head coach Martin Pospíšil.

KP Brno travels to BLK Slavia Praha this Saturday for a 6:45 p.m. tip off.

Sokol Nilfisk H. Králové proved too difficult for Žabiny Brno on Saturday, winning 90-65. Both teams finished the week with 8-4 records, which puts them both just a cut below KP Brno. The next day, Teamstore Brno (1-11) lost at home by a similar score, 68-94, to BLK Slavia Praha (5-6).

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
