Brno, Dec 13 (BD) – The Brno City Government [“zastupitelstvo”] this week approved the city budget for 2019. The budget will increase to CZK 15.195 billion, a 4% increase from last year.

According to new Mayor of Brno Markéta Vaňková (ODS), the increase is possible thanks to positive trends in the Czech economy: “The growth of the Czech economy had led to an increase in the resources available. It was possible to increase the city’s budget for 2019 by CZK 1.1 billion and the anticipated higher tax revenues for 2018 (CZK 650 million) could be also included in the budget,” explained Vaňková.

It is not only tax revenues which are increasing, but also the city’s expenditure, which will increase by CZK 478 millions year-on-year, mainly due to higher transfers for different areas of the city and higher salaries for city employees, following a decision by the Czech government in August to give all governmental employees a pay rise.

Almost a third of the budget, which is balanced, will go on capital investments. The most important projects include the completion of renovation work on Janáček Theatre, construction of a new wellness center in Za Lužánkami city pool, and the reconstruction of tram lines at Plotní, Žabovřeská and Tomkovo náměstí.

In the health sector, the City will contribute to the renovation of health centres in Lesná and Zahradníkova. In the housing sector, money will be allocated for the building of new residential houses on Vojtova and Terezy Novákové. The new budget also includes investment in sports and education. The city’s money will also support Brno’s Salvation Army and the Diocesan Charity of Brno.

The City Government also decided to provide CZK five million of financial support for the MotoGP race, as the organizing club ran at a loss of around CZK 30 million in 2018.
