“The public spaces of Brno are full of statues of men, animals and marvelous objects – there are even statues of stamps and light bulbs. Did women not also participate in the rise of our city and its reputation beyond the borders of Moravia?” Meeting Brno asks on its Facebook page. Brno, May 22 (BD) – Meeting Brno is a festival that brings people of different views, cultures, and religions together. During the festival, audiences can enjoy readings, theatre performances, concerts, visual art exhibitions, and much more.

The festival also includes a two-day programme called Meeting Brno for Women (Meeting Brno ženám) on May 30-31, 2018, which will include a discussion on the current status of women in society. (You can find out more on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/191389871675612/.)

Meeting Brno is supporting an initiative called “Even the bulb has its statue” (“I žárovka má sochu”). The official description reads: “An initiative that highlights the fact that there are no statues of the women who have built or made our city famous in the streets of Brno.”

The initiative suggests the construction of statues of several important women from Brno’s history such as Eliška Rejčka, the Czech and Polish Queen and founder of the monastery and hospital in Old Brno, Greta Tugendhat, co-owner of Villa Tugendhat, and Vítězslava Kaprálová, the first Czech female music composer and conductor.

People will be able to vote on a woman who deserves a statue in Brno during the festival. You can find more information here: https://www.facebook.com/izarovkamasochu/.

The first Meeting Brno festival took place in May 2016, building upon the project “Rok smíření (Year of Reconciliation) of 2015”. The Year of Reconciliation was a set of interrelated events with two goals – to remember all the victims of World War 2 and postwar events and to explore Brno’s history in the European context.
