CNN Travel: Brno among top places to see in Czech Republic
In a February 26 article for CNN Travel by Pavlo Fedykovych, the City of Brno was ranked among the top 11 places to visit in the Czech Republic. Photo: Villa Tugendhat by David Židlický
Brno, Mar 12 (BD) – The other ten destinations on Fedykovych’s list included Prague, Kutná Hora, Kroměříž, Český Krumlov, Bohemian Switzerland (Národní park České Švýcarsko), Karlovy Vary, Plzeň, Telč, Olomouc, and Karlštejn.
While Brno’s youthful yet not-too-touristy atmosphere, attributed to its high student population, was a prime reason for its inclusion on the list, Brno’s architecture seemed to be the most important factor.
Fedykovych mentions “a fascinating mix of architectures where one street can feature Gothic, baroque, art nouveau and functionalist buildings standing next to each other.”

While giving due recognition to St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and Špilberk Castle, it is Villa Tugendhat that Fedykovych describes as “the brightest architectural jewel of the town”.
Fedykovych also had high praise for the ossuary underneath St. James Church, which he claims is “the second largest ossuary in Europe after the Catacombs of Paris,” and of course Bar který neexistuje (“The Bar that doesn’t exist”), the trendy nightlife spot also in the centre of town.
