Are you expecting or planning on having a baby? Congratulations! Graphic: @Brnodaily

Are you also wondering how you will – besides caring for the baby itself – handle the fact that it is all happening in a different country from your own, surrounded by a different language, a different healthcare system, social system, and so on?

There are a lot of steps and rules to follow as an expat parent, and it can be difficult to navigate through them. Registering your baby is only one of them. There is also the question of receiving citizenship for your child; it can be a lengthy process and you should start as soon as possible. The result very much depends on your situation, and the baby can end up either with single or dual citizenship.

Another thing to keep in mind is that all female babies automatically receive the suffix “-ová” to their surnames in the Czech Republic because of Czech grammar rules. If the child is a foreigner, is a daughter of a parent with a nationality other than Czech, or will be living most of her life abroad, then you will need to fill out a special form to make sure she does not receive the suffix .

These are just a few examples of the steps you need to take after giving birth to a baby as an expat in the Czech republic. Fortunately, Brno Expat Centre (BEC) provides most of the information you need in their infosheet, Having a Baby, which is downloadable free of charge.

The BEC is also hosting a seminar (free of charge for registered members) on the medical, financial and legal issues connected with having a baby in Brno, taking place on the 15th of February. If you have any questions that the infosheet does not answer, or if you have a specific question for our guest speakers, send them to info@brnoexpatcentre.eu in advance and then come to the seminar to hear the answers.

You can reserve a spot at the seminar by registering on BEC’s website.
