Brno, Dec 13 (BD) – With 22 seconds left in the game, JYP Jyväskylä scored an empty-net goal and finished Kometa’s run through the Hockey Champions League on Tuesday at DRFG Arena. The final score was 3-5.
Kometa was down 0-3 at the end of the first period and scored their first goal late in the second. They cut the deficit to 3-4 when Martin Nečas scored at 50:00 and Tomáš Svoboda scored a power-play goal at 53:36.
The crowd came alive. The players had extra fuel. Yet, Kometa couldn’t get another goal through. And, when pulling their goaltender for a desperate late-game advantage, they suffered the consequences.
Jan Süss scored all of the Brno goals in the 3-3 tie in Finland last week (and he scored one in his Tipsort extraliga debut in a 4-1 victory Mlada Bolesav on Friday), but there was no more magic left.
JYP Jyväskylä advances to the Semifinals with an 8-6 composite score.
Komteta, who are currently fifth in the league standings, now has a bit of a breather before resuming play at home against Chomutov on Dec. 20. They play at Sparta on Dec. 22. On Boxing Day, Dec. 26, they will be on television to host Dukla.
KP Brno, Technic Brno Both Lose at Home
KP Brno hosted undefeated league-leader ZVVZ USK Praha and, though they played better than in the first game of the season, fell 66-87 on Saturday.
Both Edita Šujanová and Karolína Jandová had 14 points for Brno (8-4). ZVVZ USK Praha (12-0) has scored 1290 points this year (almost 300 points more than any other team); they have allowed only 600 points.
“Our players played a very decent match,” said KP Brno head coach David Zdeněk (translated from Czech). “They kept pace with the title holders for a long time and often led. We got a little bit worse in the even-numbered quarters. In the end we had problems with our rotation, and it was then that that our opponent pushed harder.”
Brno was outscored 11-22 in the second quarter and 13-26 in the fourth quarter. They had a three-point advantage in the combined first and third quarters.
KP Brno has another tough game this week: they host second-place BLK Slavia Praha on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Technic Brno let last-place U19 Chance pull away and, though they were never more than six to 10 points behind, they could not cut into the difference. Technic Brno lost, 62-73, on Sunday. U19 Chance won its first game of the season.
“Today’s match was very balanced,” said Technic Brno head coach Lucie Zitkova. “Our opponents struggled with us, but overcame their mistakes.”
Tereza Zítková and Hana Gašicová both had 15 points for Technic Brno and Angelika Miszkiel grabbed 15 rebounds.
Technic Brno (2-10) will travel to SBŠ Ostrava (2-10) on Sunday.
New-Player Bays Leads Žabiny Brno to CEWL Win
Basket Žabiny Brno (7-5), who were idle last week in the ZBL, made a significant roster move. Whitney Bays, an American, came onboard after stints in Poland and Hungary. She is a strong presence under the basket known for her rebounding.
In her first game, Bays led the way to victory at Flying Foxes SVS Post Vídeň, 66-85, in a Central Europe Women’s League contest on Thursday. Bays had 18 points. Tea Buzov, who returned from an injury, had 12 points.
Žabiny Brno host Slovanka MB on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Canyon Barry, Son of Hall of Famer, Not Enough for mmcité+ Brno
Perhaps it was appropriate. mmcité+ Brno beat visiting BC GEOSAN Kolín to start a new era with new head coach Dejan Jakara and several new players on live national television at the beginning of the season. On Saturday, BC GEOSAN Kolín beat visiting mmcité+ Brno on opening night of their newly refurbished home court to begin their own new era. The final score was 89-69.
Brno, which was still without injured starters Brian Sullivan and Radek Pumperla, was led by newcomer Canyon Barry. Barry, a 23-year-old American, scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. He is the son of Hall of Famer Rick Barry.
Brno was down 31-16 after the first quarter and they were never able to get back into the game.
“We had the same problem like in almost every game: we (finished) the first quarter with a 15-point difference,” Brno head coach Dejan Jakara said. “It’s very hard then to fight back. It doesn’t matter about all of our injuries. We will have to change something if we will want to fight still in our next games.”
Barry played for three years at the College of Charleston and a year at the University of Florida. Most recently he had been playing for the Salon Vilpas Vikings in Finland.
mmcité+ Brno host SLUNETA Ústí nad Labem on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
