Brno, Oct 29 (BD) – Transport has been collapsing in many places of the Czech Republic. Power lines have been brought down in several parts of the country.

Strong winds, gusting up to 130-150 km/h and more at higher elevations are expected to continue today across parts of Germany, Czech Republic and Austria.

Czech Hydro-meteorological Institute (ČHMÚ) has announced a meteorological phenomenon, a windstorm, with an extreme degree of danger on the whole territory of the Czech Republic (current situation by ČHMÚ here).

The North-West regions of the Czech Republic are exposed to the strong wind and risk of floods.

In locations above 600 m, strong wind will be accompanied by snow, with intense snow showers (in thunderstorms) today.

In Vienna, some parks and gardens are closed; access to the cemeteries is also restricted.

In connection with the warning of the Czech Hydro-meteorological Institute to an extremely strong wind, valid for the whole Czech Republic, the firemen draw attention to the risks associated with it.

“Do not underestimate the situation and do not overestimate your abilities,” Nicole Zaoralová, spokesperson of the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic, stresses out.

Zaoralová also warns against circulating unverified messages.

Due to the strong wind, South Moravian Fire Rescue Service recommends:

  • Prior to the wind, prevent windows, doors, remove or fix loose items (eg flower pots, garden furniture). Pay particular attention to solid and sharp objects.
  • Restrict moving outdoors and car driving
  • Do not retreat under the trees.
  • Don’t stay in the vicinity of older buildings, where the roofing (tiles, sheets) may drop.
  • Don’t go into the woods and do not go for mountain hikes.

The alert is valid for Sunday Oct 29 until 7 pm.
