Brno, Sep 21 (BD) – Brno City Council approved this week the purchase of twenty-seven more automated external defibrillators (AED). The new AEDs will be distributed in the busiest parts of Brno.

The aim of the initiative is to enable Brno citizens to provide the necessary help to those suffering from cardiac arrest before paramedics’ arrival.

“The new devices will cost nearly one and half a million crowns. Operating costs are almost fifty thousand in five years,” Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík said to the Czech daily Brnensky Denik.

According to the latest results of Eurostat research, cardiac arrest was responsible for 25.7% of the deaths in Czech Republic in 2013.

The results stresses the urgency of placing several of these computerized devices around the city.

The use of defibrillator increases the chance of survival up to 50%, while chest compression and rescue breaths (CPR) alone can save approximately around 9% of the victims.

At the moment, the defibrillators can be found in Brno city center, but this situation will change. “We want to cover all parts of the city,” Barbora Zuchová, the spokesperson of Emergency Medical Services of South Moravia told Brnensky Denik.

In August, an old man suffered a cardiac arrest at the main building of Brno Central Railway station. The employees with the help of the professional rescuers started the resuscitation process. The defibrillator located in the station was used to help the victim, Emergency Medical Services of South Moravia reported.

After the purchase, Brno will have the total of 65 defibrillators distributed around the city. Currently, only four of them are located in special boxes on the streets for people to use it.
