A political campaign or reaction to the new law ordering the removal of billboards from highways?

Brno, August 29 (BD) – The gigantic Czech flags appeared on many billboards along Czech highways replacing the usual advertisements.

On September 1st, all billboards must be removed from the close vicinity of highways and 1st class roads.

The Czech flag can not be removed from the billboards because it is a state symbol, Petr Vomáček from Central Automotoklub explains.

Questions around the matter appear as it is not clear if it’s a part of a political campaign or an act of opposition to the new law.

Lukáš Váňa, a spokesperson of the Association of Outdoor Advertising Operators (SPVR) confirmed the second version for TV Nova yesterday: “SPVR, which represents more than two-thirds of the owners of the affected advertising areas, wishes to draw attention to the absurdity of the new legal act that forbids the placement of advertising media within 250 meters from the roads.”

“We won’t compromise with billboard lobby. They should respect the law. The Ministry will definitely follow it,” Transport Minister Dan Ťok said to Lidovky.cz.

Car drivers reported Czech flags on billboards in many parts of the country. Some used it as an opportunity to joke. “Yesterday, I was driving through the D1, and it seemed like we are the nation of the greatest patriots,” shared one of the drivers on his Facebook.
