Brno, August 7 (BD) – 21 hectares near the residential area Vinohrady will stop lying dormant. Authorities together with students promise to transform illegal dumping into a picturesque park by the next summer. Photo: Pexels

The area has been undeveloped since 1997 when Brno Heating Plant (Teplárny Brno) ceased to utilize it as its wastepond. Illegal trash dumping has been a reoccurring issue since then. It is also one of the main triggers of the project that should result in the largest park in Brno.

“We desire to turn the wastepond into easily accessible place for everybody to relax and recharge batteries away from city turmoil. It is really crucial to provide for constant maintenance of the park in order to hinder illegal dumping at the spots that have been recently cleaned out by Brno university students,” the official Park Hády website informs.

Student competition to bring greenery for all

The architecture competition was announced exclusively among students in cooperation with Brno municipality and Brno Heating Plant in order to find the best suitable design of a park.

Students and local community are pivotal parts of the Hády transformation from the very beginning. “Students and residents will take part in the implementation of changes which turns the park into a community matter. The City and Heating Plant are ready to participate financially,” Petr Hladík, Deputy Mayor at Brno City Municipality says.

Urban Center on Mečová street in Brno hosts the exhibition of submitted projects from August 3 to August 25; the winning project is included. Although an expert jury has already decided, visitors of the Center can vote for the best project which will be granted 5.000 CZK.

Citizens encouraged to choose new name

June 2018 has been announced as the month when Park Hády will open its gates for the first visitors. The initial transformation starts this autumn. Citizens are invited to lend a helping hand with the works.

During following weeks, Studentské Brno (a project of Brno students) in cooperation with the Municipality and Brno Heating Plant will launch the public survey to enable citizens to vote for the name of the park. Voting is available here or on the spot of exhibition. What about Parky McParkface?
