No one passing the Statue of Margrave Jošt in Brno or its surrounding can overlook a massive frame construction filling the entire space of Moravské square. The iron pipes are implying that the Moravské square is under construction and a huge building is about to be erected. Surprisingly, the reality is slightly different.

The construction is an architectural accessory of a multi genre festival Léto 2017 (Summer 2017) which takes place the entire summer starting with Meeting Brno. Unity in diversity is a motto accompanying the entire festival and the construction itself is its materialistic epitome. Chybik+Kristof Architects & Urban Designers are responsible for this daring piece of art that supposes to present all layers of history that Moravské square experienced. The square is one of the city hubs and since the 18th century; it happened to be an embodiment of the ruling ideology in the Czech nation.

Until 1850 it was a part of fortification. Later, the statue of Josef II and so-called German House were integral parts of German community in Brno. They were torn down one by one. First, the statue after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was banished. When Germany had been vanquished in the WWII, also German House was leveled to the ground and became a resting place for deceased Red Army soldiers. During communism, a fountain with sculpture of the Communists belonged to everyday routine view of citizens. Since 1990 the fountain has remained intact.

Frame Construction Just a Preview of Actual Reconstruction

The frame construction is just a temporary happening. During 2016, there was an architectural competition announced by Brno City Municipality in order to find a permanent solution. The history of the square would be included in an architecture plan. Michal Doležel, a member of the Brno City Council said that even the German House could inspire competitors since the fragments of the House were still scattered in the Square. During the process of projects evaluation, there was a civic disapproval of the House reminder resulting in a petition that argued it could become a tribute and meeting point of Nazi-regime adherents.

The results of the competition are allegedly going to turn into reality in the beginning of 2018. The winner, a company from the Czech Republic is planning to emphasize major pedestrian routes, largely open the space, and provide a place for relax for all generations just in the heart of Brno.
